Lily Allen made her return to Saturday Night Live with an emotional performance featuring two songs from her latest album, West End Girls. This marked her first appearance on the iconic late-night show since her debut in 2007.
The British pop star, now 40, delivered her set against the backdrop of personal experiences, particularly the dissolution of her marriage to Stranger Things actor David Harbour. Allen’s new album reflects themes of heartbreak and self-exploration.
Introduced by host Josh O’Connor, Allen began with “Sleepwalking,” which saw her performing in a dimly lit bedroom dressed in a white nightgown. The introspective ballad touched on the pain of a fractured relationship.
She followed with “Madeline,” which featured a striking visual element: a translucent curtain that revealed Dakota Johnson silhouetted as a woman embroiled in an extramarital affair. As the song’s spoken-word section culminated in the woman reading a revealing text message, Johnson stepped forward and affectionately kissed Allen on the cheek.
In discussing West End Girls, Allen described it as a blend of reality and fantasy, admitting that it does not present an idealized view of her marriage. The two were wed in 2020.
“It was an act of desperation, actually,” Allen remarked in a late November interview with CBS Mornings. “Since I’ve put it out, it’s felt completely and utterly liberating.”
As she prepares for her upcoming arena tour, which kicks off on March 2 in Glasgow, Scotland, Allen continues to resonate with audiences through her poignant and relatable artistry.
Saturday Night Live will conclude 2025 with a special episode on December 21, hosted by Ariana Grande and featuring Cher as the musical guest.
