Les Snead Faces Challenges Beyond Just Matthew Stafford
Rams Face Key Decisions Ahead of 2026 Season
As the Los Angeles Rams prepare for the 2026 season, significant decisions loom over the future of quarterback Matthew Stafford and standout receiver Puka Nacua. Should Stafford decide to return for an 18th NFL season, a notable salary increase is anticipated. Nacua, following an impressive season, is also in line for a lucrative contract extension.
General Manager Les Snead, who recently extended his contract alongside Head Coach Sean McVay, discussed these developments in a videoconference with reporters. He expressed a sense of commitment to the team, emphasizing the "opportunity to continue shouldering my responsibility" to owner Stan Kroenke and the franchise as a whole.
Stafford, a finalist for the NFL MVP award, is expected to make a decision soon. He will celebrate his 38th birthday on Saturday. “We’re going to let Matthew decide,” Snead stated, noting they have had "productive conversations" about Stafford’s future and allowing for space as he considers his options.
In 2024, following a training camp holdout due to a contract impasse, Stafford and the Rams agreed on a year-to-year contract approach. Last year’s negotiations culminated in an agreement on March 1. Snead expressed a desire to expedite the process this year, stating, “I think all of us want it to be shorter,” compared to previous timelines. He stressed that the goal was to avoid lengthy negotiations by fostering a collaborative and supportive working relationship.
Currently, Stafford’s contract reflects a $48.3 million salary-cap number for the final year of his extension, with none of his $16 million base salary guaranteed. Despite these figures, Stafford is coming off a season where he led the league in touchdown passes and passing yards, earning All-Pro honors.
When asked if Snead expects a request for greater compensation, he responded, “At this point, I think the first part of the equation is a simple, ‘Hey, I want to be back, and let’s go.’”
In addition to Stafford, Nacua is a key figure as he seeks an extension after a remarkable season, where he was recognized as an All-Pro and NFL Offensive Player of the Year finalist. Soon turning 24, his performance has positioned him to become one of the highest-paid players at his position. He ended the 2025 season with a $5.7 million salary-cap hit and earned around $1.1 million in 2025.
Snead is well-versed in negotiations with drafted players in similar positions, having previously extended contracts for notable players like Aaron Donald and Jared Goff. “He’s evolved into one of the best,” Snead remarked regarding Nacua. “But there’s also so many variables that go into that, that make it more complex than it would seem on the surface level.”
Besides Stafford and Nacua, notable players eligible for extensions include Kobie Turner, Byron Young, and Steve Avila from the 2023 draft class. Snead mentioned that the Rams would first focus on players with expiring contracts, such as cornerback Cobie Durant and safety Kam Curl, before addressing extensions.
As the Rams look to finalize their roster for the upcoming season, these decisions will play a crucial role in shaping the team’s future direction.
