Leonardo DiCaprio Reflects on Role Choices and Career Path
Leonardo DiCaprio recently addressed his career trajectory and decisions in an interview with Deadline. The actor, now 51, discussed previous statements where he described passing on the lead role in Boogie Nights as his "greatest regret."
During the interview, DiCaprio clarified that his comments were not merely about the role itself but emphasized his admiration for director Paul Thomas Anderson. "Well, I think that was my answer to a question in the guise of speaking to [Paul Thomas Anderson]. Without getting too personal about my own life, the question was, ‘What do you regret most?’ It came from the standpoint of just being a fan of his work for so long," he said, recalling remarks made for Esquire in August.
He fondly remembered watching Boogie Nights as a defining moment for his generation, marking the rise of a new cinematic voice. "I do remember watching that movie and it being just a lightning rod moment for my generation. It was like the arrival of a new cinematic titan," he noted.
DiCaprio reflected positively on his decision, stating, "No regrets. I look back at that film and realize the thanks I have for being a part of it." He acknowledged that his participation in Titanic, directed by James Cameron, allowed him to shape his career. "The dilemma for me at that point was, of course, I would’ve loved to have done both movies, but it just couldn’t happen at that moment," he explained.
Describing his experiences, DiCaprio emphasized the value of having the freedom to make his own choices in his career. "I don’t know what my ability or my career would’ve been without that film making it possible to steer the course of my own career. So, I’m very thankful," he concluded.
As he looks back, DiCaprio expresses gratitude for the opportunities that have shaped his career in Hollywood, reflecting a journey that has included collaboration with various influential filmmakers.

Looking back, DiCaprio expressed admiration for Mark Wahlberg’s performance in Boogie Nights, acknowledging that "I don’t think anyone could have done a better job than Mark Wahlberg in that movie." He values the evolution of Anderson as a storyteller, which contributes to his sincere appreciation for wanting to collaborate with him.
Reflecting on the paths each actor has taken since their early careers, DiCaprio stated, "We’ve gone on these paths together and then to come back around and be able to collaborate with Paul on this is just amazing."
