Sean “Diddy” Combs’s connection with Kim Porter was immediate upon their first meeting. “When Sean saw Kim, it was different,” Tim “Dawg” Patterson remarked in the 2025 Netflix docuseries *Sean Combs: The Reckoning*. “He put it all on the table for Kim.”
The two began their relationship in the early 1990s while Combs was establishing his career in the hip-hop industry. Prior to their meeting, Porter had a son, Quincy Brown, born in 1991, with producer Al B. Sure! When Quincy was three, Porter started dating Combs, who embraced his role as a father figure.
In 1998, Porter and Combs welcomed their first child together, Christian Combs. However, the couple split shortly after, leading to a custody battle. They reconciled in 2003 and had twin daughters, D’Lila Star Combs and Jessie James Combs, in 2006. Ultimately, they ended their relationship for good in 2007.
On November 15, 2018, Porter was found deceased at her home at the age of 47. An autopsy revealed she succumbed to lobar pneumonia. Following her death, Combs shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, stating, “I don’t know what I’m going to do without you baby. I miss you so much… We were more than best friends, we were more than soulmates…”
In September 2024, Combs faced arrest on charges of sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation with the intent to engage in prostitution. By July 2025, he was acquitted of the initial charges but found guilty of two counts regarding transportation for prostitution.

Porter and Combs’s relationship began after she entered Uptown Records with her then-boyfriend. Combs admired her instantly, recalling in a 2006 *Essence* interview, “I wasn’t trying to holler at her or anything, but I was admiring her — her lips, her eyes, her mouth, her shape, her energy.” They started dating by 1994, quickly forming a close bond.
Following the birth of their son, Christian, in 1998, the couple’s relationship faced turmoil. Combs’s affair with Jennifer Lopez led to their separation, which prompted a custody dispute. Despite their challenges, they reestablished their relationship, welcoming twins D’Lila and Jessie in 2006. However, they broke apart for the final time in July 2007, shortly after Porter learned about Combs’s daughter from another relationship.
In a later interview with *Essence*, Porter reflected on her decision to leave Combs, revealing that she discovered his infidelity through a friend rather than him. “It’s not an original script,” she noted, but emphasized the importance of respect, stating, “Once the respect is gone, I’m not even listening to you.”

Despite their conflicts, Porter and Combs came together again in 2003, strengthening their family unit. Porter was deeply committed to her children, with Quincy recalling in April 2023 his intention to honor her legacy. “I’m my mom’s son… There’s so much life for me to expand on off of her life,” he shared.
The family ties remain strong. Quincy has embraced a managerial role in the lives of his younger sisters as they pursue their aspirations, reinforcing the bonds established by their mother. Meanwhile, D’Lila and Jessie graduated high school in 2024, poised to build their own futures.
