LAUSD Teachers and Staff to Share Possible Strike Date at Downtown LA Rally
LOS ANGELES – Thousands of employees from the Los Angeles Unified School District are convening in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday for a significant labor rally that could lead to the announcement of a district-wide strike date. The rally, dubbed "Fight for LA," is set to commence at 4:30 p.m. at Grand Park, where leaders from three unions plan to address their members.
Approximately 94% of United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) members have voted to authorize a strike as negotiations over salary schedules and contracts, which expired in June 2024, have stalled. This potential walkout would impact approximately 33,000 employees, including teachers, principals, custodians, and cafeteria workers.
The event unites three labor groups: UTLA, SEIU Local 99, and the Associated Administrators of Los Angeles. These organizations collectively represent a diverse workforce essential to the daily operations of schools. Sources indicate a specific strike date may be revealed during the rally, intensifying the pressure on district leadership.
Union representatives have voiced frustration regarding the district’s financial proposals. UTLA President stated that the recent salary offer "is not enough to fix broken salary schedules," emphasizing that it fails to "attract educators to LAUSD" or adequately address the financial challenges many educators face.
Looking ahead, a walkout could still be avoided if an agreement is reached before the anticipated deadline. Should a strike date be announced, the district and union leaders will have a limited timeframe to negotiate and avert a work stoppage. Parents are advised to prepare for potential disruptions to school schedules and services, although the district has yet to release a formal contingency plan in the event of a complete work stoppage.
