Lauren Neustadter from Hello Sunshine Shares Exciting Updates on New TV Shows ‘Elle’ and ‘Lucky,’ Along with the Film ‘The Nightingale’ as Production Begins
Apple TV Confirms Season 2 of *The Last Thing He Told Me*
Apple TV has officially renewed *The Last Thing He Told Me* for a second season, nearly a year after the show’s debut. This announcement coincides with author Laura Dave’s upcoming sequel novel, *The First Time I Saw Him*, which has been selected as Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club’s first sequel title for January 2026.
The ending of Season 2 sets the stage for a possible third season. Showrunner Josh Neustadter, alongside stars Jennifer Garner and Judy Greer, has expressed interest in exploring further developments for their characters, who have become increasingly conflicted. It remains unclear if Dave will integrate another book into the narrative.
“[Josh] and [Laura] were very in sync about everything that was going on,” Neustadter noted, discussing character dynamics and plot developments. “Laura trusted Josh and our writers to take the story and run with it, making it rich and cinematic. We really put our foot on the gas in season two, with so many plot twists that keep audiences breathless.”
Season 2 of *The Last Thing He Told Me* is part of a broader trend of companion sequel novels linked to television adaptations. Other Hello Sunshine projects also include the upcoming third season of *Big Little Lies*, which accompanies Liane Moriarty’s sequel, *Big Little Truths*, and Marissa Stapley’s *Lucky*, set for small-screen adaptation on Apple TV in July, recently followed by news of Stapley’s sequel, *Not So Lucky*.
In a recent interview, Neustadter also hinted at future projects such as *Elle*, a *Legally Blonde* prequel series premiering on Prime Video on July 1, and updates on films being developed based on Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club selections, including Curtis Sittenfeld’s *Romantic Comedy* and Claire Leslie Hall’s *Broken Country*. The upcoming *Mrs. Claus* film starring Jennifer Garner at Netflix is also being actively developed.
Neustadter addressed a question about *Elle*, confirming that production is currently underway in Vancouver. “We have a great first season, and we were very gratified to know that Amazon was as enamored of it as we were,” Neustadter stated. “The first season follows Elle’s first semester of junior year, and we are eager to continue with the second semester.”
As the *Legally Blonde* franchise approaches its 25th anniversary, Neustadter emphasized the significance of showcasing relatable themes for multi-generational audiences. “My hope is that parents will watch it with their kids. I think the world needs Elle Woods,” she added.
Discussions surrounding *Lucky* also revealed its connection to popular literature, with Neustadter highlighting her enthusiasm for collaborating with both author Marissa Stapley and Netflix’s adaptation team. “When Marissa expressed interest in a second book after seeing the scripts, it was a truly exciting moment.”
In addressing future seasons of *The Morning Show*, Neustadter remarked on the impressive ensemble cast and the thoughtful approach the series takes in reflecting contemporary societal issues. “This season is absolutely no exception,” she said.
Furthermore, Neustadter expressed excitement regarding Lianne Moriarty’s soon-to-be-released book connected to *Big Little Lies*, as well as plans for adaptations of *Maybe Next Time* and *Broken Country*. “Both are in development and we believe they have incredible potential, especially the latter, which features compelling characters and strong female protagonists,” she stated.
In closing, Neustadter spoke highly of the ongoing project *The Nightingale*, featuring the Fanning sisters, illustrating her deep admiration for the original book and the critical importance of bringing this story to life on screen.
