LAPD Addresses Distracted Driving as Awareness Month Begins
LAPD Highlights Distracted Driving Concerns as April Marks National Awareness Month
As National Distracted Driving Awareness Month begins on April 1, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is urging drivers to remain vigilant on the roads. The initiative aims to tackle the dangers associated with distracted driving, particularly those arising from mobile phone use.
Recent data from the 2025 California Statewide Public Opinion Survey reveals that 71.4% of respondents consider distractions from texting or checking phone notifications a significant safety concern. “Distracted driving continues to put everyone on the road at risk. When drivers take their eyes off the road, even for a few seconds, lives can change forever," stated LAPD Captain Yvonne Ortiz.
The LAPD emphasizes that various distractions—such as using touchscreen displays, adjusting the radio, or even eating—can lead to severe consequences. In 2023, distracted driving incidents resulted in 158 fatalities in California, marking a 6.9% increase from the previous year. Authorities note that these figures may be underestimated, as determining distraction as a causal factor is not always immediately feasible.
Throughout April, law enforcement will be particularly focused on enforcing California’s hands-free cell phone law, which prohibits drivers from manually using their phones or other devices while behind the wheel, including when stopped at a traffic signal.
To help drivers maintain focus while operating vehicles, police recommend the following measures:
- Store your phone out of reach or silence notifications to avoid distractions.
- Prepare by setting GPS devices and adjusting mirrors before starting to drive.
- Keep both hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road, avoiding multitasking activities such as eating or grooming.
- Set a positive example by demonstrating focused driving behaviors to passengers.
The LAPD’s campaign underscores the ongoing effort to enhance road safety and reduce the risks associated with distracted driving.
