Lane Closures on the 405 Freeway: Important Sepulveda Pass Construction Begins February 3
Significant Lane Reductions Scheduled on 405 Freeway for Construction
LOS ANGELES – Travelers on the 405 Freeway through the Sepulveda Pass should anticipate major delays next week as Caltrans implements overnight lane reductions and ramp closures for essential infrastructure upgrades. The project aims to modernize and enhance the aging roadway between Westwood and Van Nuys.
The construction work is divided into two phases. The first phase starts on Tuesday, February 3, running nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Friday, February 6. During this period, up to two lanes will be closed in both directions between Wilshire Boulevard and the Skirball Center/Mulholland Drive area. Additionally, key ramps, including the Getty Center Drive on-ramp to northbound I-405 and the Sepulveda Boulevard on-ramps, will be completely closed.
Following this initial phase, the second phase will occur over an extended weekend from 10 p.m. on Friday, February 6, until 5 a.m. on Monday, February 9. Both northbound and southbound directions of the I-405 will be reduced to three lanes in areas near Getty Center Drive and Bel Air Crest Road.
Caltrans officials have urged motorists to exercise caution during the construction and to be aware of their surroundings. They emphasized the importance of being "Work Zone Alert" and to "Slow for the Cone Zone." Residents and businesses near the construction area may also experience noise, vibrations, and dust as a result of the work.
Key Timeline:
- Tuesday, February 3 – Friday, February 6: Overnight lane reductions and ramp closures from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- Friday, February 6 at 10 p.m.: Start of extended weekend work; lanes reduced to three in each direction.
- Monday, February 9 at 5 a.m.: Expected completion of weekend work phase.
Commuters are advised to plan for additional travel time or consider alternate routes, such as utilizing the 101 Freeway for surface streets. Residents in the Sepulveda Pass area may want to keep windows closed at night to reduce the impact of construction dust and noise.
