Luka Doncic scored 36 points, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a 100-92 victory over the Houston Rockets on Monday night, marking the first of a two-game series pivotal in the Western Conference playoff race. With this win, the Lakers moved 1.5 games ahead of the Rockets for third place in the conference standings.
The game showcased a competitive atmosphere, featuring 13 lead changes. Despite trailing 57-51 at halftime, the Lakers secured their sixth consecutive victory, showcasing their resilience and teamwork.
LeBron James contributed significantly, assisting Marcus Smart on a crucial corner 3-pointer that extended Los Angeles’ lead to 94-90 with two minutes left in the game. James finished the night with 18 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
Doncic made an impact with back-to-back 3-pointers in the waning moments of the third quarter, shifting the momentum and giving the Lakers an 83-80 advantage. He finished the game shooting 4 for 12 from beyond the arc and is now just 11 three-pointers away from matching D’Angelo Russell’s franchise record of 226 in a single season. This game marked Doncic’s sixth straight outing with 30 or more points, although he narrowly missed his 12th 40-point game of the season, shooting 14 for 27 from the field.
Jabari Smith Jr. led the Rockets with 22 points, supported by Amen Thompson with 19 and Kevin Durant with 18. Houston struggled with ball control, committing 24 turnovers, while the Lakers kept their mistakes to just 12.
The Rockets were missing Alperen Sengun, who was sidelined due to lower back pain. Sengun has been a key player for Houston, averaging 20.2 points per game, second only to Durant.
Earlier in the season, the Rockets had secured a decisive 119-96 victory over the Lakers in their first meeting on December 25 in Los Angeles.
