LA City Council Approves Funding to Increase LAPD Staffing
Los Angeles City Council Approves Partial Funding for LAPD Hiring
On Friday, the Los Angeles City Council approved additional funding aimed at enabling the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to hire new officers over the next two months. The council allocated over $1 million for January and February, amounting to approximately 25% of the $4.4 million originally requested by the department.
Discussions during the session featured moments of tension, particularly as LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell and Mayor Karen Bass urged council members to provide additional resources. They emphasized that the full amount is crucial for maintaining hiring levels through the end of the fiscal year, especially in preparation for significant events such as the FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympics.
"We are bleeding out. We are preparing for the Games, and we are going the wrong direction," McDonnell expressed. He detailed that the department is currently operating with 1,400 fewer officers than needed.
Anticipating demographic changes, the LAPD expects to lose up to 500 officers due to retirement in the coming years.
As this was the final City Council meeting of 2025, members will reconvene in January to reassess funding strategies for the LAPD’s hiring initiatives for the remainder of the fiscal year.
