La Brea Tar Pits to Undergo Two-Year Renovation Before the 2028 Olympics
La Brea Tar Pits Set for Two-Year Renovation Ahead of 2028 Olympics
LOS ANGELES – One of the city’s most iconic landmarks, the La Brea Tar Pits, will close for renovations on July 6, 2026, in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The museum’s revamp aims to modernize the facility while increasing space for its extensive collection of over 2 million specimens, marking its first major renovation in five decades.
The renovation project is designed to introduce new research spaces and updated exhibition areas. According to the museum, these improvements will enhance visitor engagement with the scientific process. While the museum itself will be closed to the public, the surrounding outdoor park and active excavation sites will remain accessible throughout the renovation period.
An exact reopening date for the museum has yet to be announced, but it is expected to resume operations just before the Summer Games. The update follows a similar modernization announcement for the Getty Center, signaling a broader effort to enhance cultural institutions across the city in anticipation of the Olympics.
