Kirsten Dunst Teams Up with Sydney Sweeney in Exciting New Lionsgate Sequel, ‘The Housemaid’s Secret’
EXCLUSIVE: Following the global success of The Housemaid, Lionsgate is moving forward with a highly anticipated sequel. The studio has announced that Kirsten Dunst will join Sydney Sweeney in The Housemaid’s Secret, based on Freida McFadden’s second novel in her Housemaid series. Paul Feig will return to direct, with producers Todd Lieberman from Hidden Pictures, Feig through his Pretty Dangerous Pictures, and Sweeney under her Fifty-Fifty Films banner.
Screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine, who adapted the first book into last year’s hit film, will reprise her role in crafting the screenplay. Michele Morrone will also return, reprising his role as Enzo. Carly Elter, who oversaw the first film for Hidden Pictures, will return as executive producer, alongside Alex Young from Hidden Pictures. Additionally, Kaylee McGregor from Fifty Fifty will co-produce.
In The Housemaid’s Secret, Millie (Sweeney) returns to a new job, tasked with managing a household while never allowed to see the woman she works for. As she digs deeper, she uncovers unsettling truths hidden behind a locked door that holds secrets darker than her own. This story draws from McFadden’s 2023 sequel novel.
“It is a privilege to bring The Housemaid’s next chapter to the screen with Kirsten Dunst. She is an icon. Her career reflects extraordinary range and fearlessness,” remarked Erin Westerman, president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “Opposite the ever-magnetic Sydney Sweeney, she will be an electrifying force in a world where nothing is ever quite as it seems.”
Chelsea Kujawa and Maria Ascanio are overseeing the project for Lionsgate, with Robert Melnik handling the negotiations on behalf of the studio.
Since its release during the holiday season, The Housemaid has become one of the biggest hits of 2025, grossing nearly $400 million worldwide. Following this success, Lionsgate swiftly secured Sweeney’s involvement due to scheduling concerns while also recognizing the need for another A-list actor. After several discussions, producers were eager to bring Dunst onboard, especially following her notable performance in last year’s Roofman.
The Oscar-nominated Dunst has recently signed on for the sequel to A Minecraft Movie, slated for release next June. She will also star in The Entertainment System Is Down, directed by Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund. Dunst’s recent projects include Roofman and Civil War.
She is represented by UTA, Entertainment 360, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller, Gellman, Meigs & Fox.
