Kings Fall to Flyers in Shootout but Reclaim Wild Card Position
Flyers Secure Shootout Victory Over Kings, Staying in Wild-Card Hunt
In an intense shootout, Trevor Zegras and Matvei Michkov propelled the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-3 win against the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night. This marks the Flyers’ fourth victory in five games, keeping them competitive in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
Noah Cates contributed significantly, notching a goal and an assist, while Travis Konecny and Travis Sanheim also found the back of the net. Goaltender Samuel Ersson made 22 saves, showcasing his skills as the Flyers remain six points adrift of the Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings, who currently occupy the two wild-card spots.
Earlier in the week, the Flyers defeated the Anaheim Ducks 3-2, with Cates scoring the decisive goal in overtime.
On the other side, the Kings saw a strong performance from Artemi Panarin, who registered a goal and an assist. Quinton Byfield and Anze Kopitar also scored, but misses from Adrian Kempe and Panarin in the shootout kept Los Angeles from sealing the win. Despite this, the Kings still positioned themselves for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
Panarin’s powerful wrist shot on a power play tied the game at 3-3 with just under ten minutes remaining in the game, securing a crucial point in the standings. Darcy Kuemper complemented the offense with 17 saves in goal.
The Flyers faced some challenges, competing without forwards Sean Couturier, Luke Glendening, and Denver Barkey due to injuries, which forced them to rely on an unconventional lineup of 11 forwards and seven defensemen.
Looking ahead, the Kings will face the Buffalo Sabres at Crypto.com Arena this Saturday.
