Kings Fall Short Against Sabres, Missing Key Opportunity for Playoff Boost
Buffalo Sabres Extend Winning Streak with Victory Over Kings
The Buffalo Sabres continued their impressive run in the NHL, securing a 4-1 victory against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. Zach Benson contributed significantly to the win, recording one goal and one assist as the Sabres captured their fourth straight win and their 12th in the last 13 games.
Tage Thompson, Sam Carrick, and Rasmus Dahlin also found the net for Buffalo. Midway through the third period, Carrick and Dahlin scored just 59 seconds apart, further solidifying the Sabres’ dominance. Benson sealed the victory with an empty-net goal. In goal, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 26 saves to support the team’s efforts.
The win has placed the Sabres firmly in the race for the Atlantic Division title, marking a significant effort to end a 14-year playoff drought—the longest in the NHL. The team’s momentum was bolstered by enthusiastic fan support, even as visitors.
For the Kings, Artemi Panarin scored, extending his point streak to five games with five goals and 11 assists in 13 appearances for the team. Anze Kopitar tied Marcel Dionne for the Kings’ franchise record for most points scored on home ice, while goaltender Anton Forsberg recorded 28 saves. Despite the strong start, with Panarin scoring a power-play goal in the first period—the first goal the Sabres had allowed on the road in 176 minutes—the Kings, now holding a record of 28-25-16, fell behind the Nashville Predators in the Western Conference wild card standings following Nashville’s win over the Vegas Golden Knights.
Looking ahead, the Kings will face off against Utah on Sunday, seeking to regain traction in their playoff aspirations.
