Kings face disappointment after tough eight-round shootout loss to Predators
Nashville Predators Clinch Overtime Thriller Against LA Kings
In a gripping showdown on Thursday night, Luke Evangelista scored the decisive goal in the eighth round of the shootout, leading the Nashville Predators to a narrow 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Kings. This win shakes up the Western Conference playoff race, with Nashville, the Kings, and the San Jose Sharks all tied at 79 points for the second wild-card playoff position. However, the Sharks hold a critical game in hand after their earlier 4-1 triumph over Toronto.
Despite trailing by three goals, the Predators managed to rebound and end a three-game losing streak. Steven Stamkos netted his 37th goal and Jonathan Marchessault broke a 14-game scoring drought, contributing to the team’s efforts. Filip Forsberg and Zachary L’Heureux also found the back of the net.
Nashville’s goaltender, Juuse Saros, was instrumental, stopping 29 shots and showcasing his skills in a flawless shootout performance. The initial 15 skaters in the shootout failed to score until Evangelista executed a deke and backhand shot, marking his first successful shootout goal of the season.
For the Kings, Adrian Kempe was a standout, scoring two goals, while Joel Armia leveled the game midway through the third period. Scott Laughton added another goal, but the Kings have now lost six of their last eight games, putting their playoff hopes in jeopardy. Darcy Kuemper rebounded from a shaky start, making 31 saves during regulation and the shootout.
Before the match, the Kings celebrated the legacy of retiring captain Anze Kopitar with a ceremony honoring his remarkable 20-year career and recent achievement of becoming the team’s all-time leading scorer.
The game began with excitement, as Forsberg scored just seconds in, quickly followed by L’Heureux capitalizing on a Kings defensive miscue. Although Kuemper briefly halted the Predators’ momentum with a penalty shot saved against Ryan O’Reilly, Marchessault’s early second-period goal rejuvenated Nashville.
The Kings responded with Kempe’s first goal, later netting another to notch his fourth 30-goal season. Laughton’s rebound goal kept the Kings competitive until Armia’s final equalizer set the stage for the dramatic shootout.
Next, the Kings will face the Toronto Maple Leafs at Crypto.com Arena on Saturday, as they continue their pursuit of a playoff spot.
