Kings Celebrate Third Straight Win Over Red Wings
Detroit — The Los Angeles Kings defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 Tuesday night, with goaltender Anton Forsberg making 26 saves. The victory marks the Kings’ third consecutive win.
In a noteworthy individual achievement, Patrick Kane of the Red Wings tied Mike Modano for the most points by an American-born player in NHL history. Kane reached this milestone—his 1,374th point—by assisting on a goal from Alex DeBrincat late in the third period. At 37 years old, Kane matched Modano’s record, achieved when Modano was 40. Over his career, Kane has accumulated 500 goals and 874 assists across 1,341 regular-season games, while Modano retired in 2011 with 561 goals and 813 assists in 1,499 games.
The Kings got on the scoreboard with Samuel Helenius netting his second goal of the season at the 10-minute mark of the second period, assisted by Jeff Malott. Andrei Kuzmenko extended the Kings’ lead to 2-0 with a power-play goal at 6:46 of the third period, assisted by Adrian Kempe and Kevin Fiala. Despite ranking last in the NHL for power-play performance, this marked the Kings’ 24th power-play goal of the season.
Detroit’s John Gibson recorded 19 saves, but his eight-game win streak came to an end after yielding a goal in the second period and another early in the third. The Red Wings, who managed to score late in the third period with DeBrincat’s goal—set up by Kane and Moritz Seider after pulling Gibson for an extra skater—fell to just their second loss in six games and third in their last eleven.
Corey Perry sealed the Kings’ victory with an empty-net goal at 18:47 in the final period. The team has taken points in their last six games, with a record of 3-0-3 during this stretch.
