Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd Depart from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’; Shonda Rhimes Hints at a Joyful Conclusion for Teddy and Owen
In a significant development for Grey’s Anatomy, longtime cast members Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd will be departing from the series at the conclusion of the current season. Their characters, Teddy Altman and Owen Hunt, have navigated a complex relationship throughout their time on the show, evolving from friends to romantic partners and eventually to co-parenting exes.
Sources indicate that McKidd and Raver were informed of their exits over a month ago. Their final appearance on the series will occur in the Season 22 finale, which recently concluded production and is scheduled to air on May 7 on ABC, with streaming available the following day on Hulu.
While their departures may ease some of the show’s budget constraints, Raver and McKidd’s exits are primarily seen as a creative choice, especially considering the intertwined narratives of their characters. Shonda Rhimes, the show’s creator and executive producer, suggested that there will be a satisfying conclusion for fans who have followed the storyline of Owen and Teddy in recent seasons.
“Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy’s love story evolve and deepen – two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other,” Rhimes said. “It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves.”
McKidd has been part of Grey’s Anatomy since Season 5, marking his eighteenth season on the show. He expressed heartfelt gratitude for his time on the series, stating, “Grey’s Anatomy has been a huge chapter of my life, creatively and personally, and I’m deeply grateful for everything the show has given me over the years.”
Raver joined the cast in Season 6 as a recurring character and quickly became a series regular. After a brief departure, she returned in Season 14, bringing her total tenure on the show to twelve seasons. “Playing Dr. Teddy Altman will always hold a dear and special place in my heart,” Raver remarked.
Meg Marinis, executive producer and showrunner, also indicated the possibility of Raver and McKidd returning in future episodes, noting, “While their story is coming to a close, this is never truly a goodbye.”
The history of Owen and Teddy’s relationship has been marked by significant ups and downs, including friendship during their military service, various romantic entanglements, and recent developments hinting at a possible reconciliation. In the Season 22 finale, Teddy ended their marriage, reflecting the challenges the couple has faced throughout the series.
Rhimes commended the actors for their contributions, stating, “Kevin and Kim bring extraordinary talent, nuance, and heart to their roles as Owen and Teddy. Their contributions leave an indelible mark on Grey’s Anatomy, both in front of and behind the camera.”
As a director, McKidd has helmed 48 episodes since his debut in Season 7, including the upcoming finale. Raver has directed three episodes during her time on the show.
While cast exits are not uncommon in long-running series, simultaneous departures of this magnitude are rare. Historic precedents include the exits of Chyler Leigh and Eric Dane, as well as Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew.
As fans prepare for the upcoming finale, both Rhimes and Marinis expressed their deep appreciation for Raver and McKidd, underscoring the lasting impact both actors have had on the show’s legacy.
