Kenya Barris Steps Into Documentary Directing with Jerry West Film for Amazon
EXCLUSIVE: Jerry West, the legendary former LA Laker, is set to be the focus of a new documentary.
Amazon has announced the upcoming release of Jerry West: The Logo, a feature-length film honoring the iconic player, who passed away in 2024.
This documentary marks the directorial debut of Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, who has produced notable documentaries such as Netflix’s Civil: Ben Crump and Blood Brothers: Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali, though this is his first time directing one.
The film, produced by Barris’ Khalabo Ink Society in collaboration with Propagate, will explore West’s remarkable life and career, with a premiere date set for April 16.
West is renowned for his incredible buzzer-beater shot from 60 feet that tied game three of the 1970 NBA Finals against the New York Knicks. He secured a place on the NBA All-Star team for 14 seasons and won a championship in 1972. After his playing career, West coached the Lakers for three years before transitioning to a general manager role.
Jerry West: The Logo features some of West’s final interviews, delving into themes of “the price of greatness and the man who paid it.” The documentary provides a rare glimpse into West’s personal struggles, including his battles with depression, the impact of his obsession on his marriage, and his complex relationship with fatherhood.
The film will include interviews with a host of notable figures including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, as well as West’s wife and children.
Barris is joined in production by Mychelle Deschamps and Hale Rothstein, with executive producers including Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, Drew Buckley, Isabel San Vargas, Linh Le of Propagate, along with Steven Leckart and E Brian Dobbins. The documentary also features producers Jamie Nelsen and Susana Santiago.
