NEED TO KNOW
- Keegan-Michael Key and Danny McBride star in a humorous Super Bowl ad for State Farm.
- The duo portrays agents from Halfway There Insurance, humorously promising less than the bare minimum.
- Hailee Steinfeld and the girl group Katseye also appear in the commercial, which will air in its entirety during the first half of the game on Sunday.
Keegan-Michael Key and Danny McBride return as an unconventional comedic pair in State Farm’s latest advertisement. The commercial, titled “Stop Livin’ on a Prayer,” showcases the actors as chaotic agents from Halfway There Insurance, highlighting their tendency to neglect essential coverage.
In an amusing exchange, Hailee Steinfeld questions, “So you guys are just like State Farm, right?” She then receives a list of services that the agents do not actually provide. From minimal boat coverage to vague bike insurance—regardless of whether the customer owns a bicycle—the agents reveal their plans “leave out a lot.” Should any damage occur to a client’s home, they indicate it may be a problem.
The agents do, however, excel at energetically performing a parody of ’80s music, belting out their limitations to the tune of “Livin’ on a Prayer,” implying that without State Farm, one might as well be out of luck.
This light-hearted and unconventional commercial aligns with State Farm’s reputation, which is part of what drew both comedians into the project. “I felt like the ad was really funny. It made me laugh,” McBride shared. “And then once I found out Keegan was going to be in it, it was sort of like a no-brainer. Why not? [I get to] be with this cool guy.”
Key, echoing McBride’s sentiment, added, “Both of us, being people who work in comedy a lot, that’s our space typically. It’s nice to find a fun spot that’s clear. For me, State Farm is an iconic brand. They’ve been killing it in the ad space for a decade now. Doing a Super Bowl ad with Danny McBride for State Farm? It was the best. A total no-brainer.”

The filming process, known for spontaneity due to both actors’ improv skills, added an exhilarating dimension to the project. “There was a wonderful kind of excitement, because you got to keep your head on a swivel,” Key described. “I know I’m allowed to improvise, and I know he’s allowed to improvise. There’s this nice energy, a crackling, unknown energy in the air, which was really fun.”
McBride noted the unique atmosphere of the shoot, stating, “Sometimes in commercials, you don’t get that feeling of spontaneity because of timing, but this one felt like we were making a movie or a TV show. It was just fun. One day, we were hanging in a garage from wires; it was not your typical commercial set. It was great.”

Alongside Steinfeld, the popular girl group Katseye also makes an appearance. However, the arrival of one famed character had both McBride and Key starstruck. “Every day was something exciting to look forward to,” McBride shared. “We shot over three days, with every set being unique. When Jake from State Farm appeared on set, I think we both got a little quiet. We were a bit starstruck.”
Key added, “There was some reverence.”
The ad concludes with a teaser reading, “To Be Continued…”, leaving viewers eager to see what will unfold during the Super Bowl.
