Kate Winslet Takes on Female Lead in Andy Serkis’ ‘LOTR: The Hunt For Gollum’
Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet is set to join the cast of the upcoming film directed by Andy Serkis, following extensive negotiations throughout last year. The production will relocate Winslet to New Zealand, where filming will take place from late May through October.
Winslet’s connection to New Zealand dates back to her work on Peter Jackson’s 1994 film Heavenly Creatures.
In this new installment, Winslet will share the screen with returning stars Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, and Serkis himself reprising his iconic role as Gollum. They have portrayed these characters since their debut in Jackson’s 2001 film, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, as well as in the subsequent Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, which are based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s celebrated works.

Set between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, the film follows Aragorn’s daunting mission to capture Gollum before he can disclose the location of the Ring to Sauron. Much of the story is derived from Tolkien’s footnotes.

In a past interview, Winslet revealed that she would be out of the country for several months this year but did not specify her commitments at the time.
Serkis has been engaged in pre-production efforts in Los Angeles and New Zealand. Filming is set to commence in May, with Serkis taking the helm as director. The production, backed by Warner Bros, has been scripted by Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou, with producing credits going to Jackson, Boyens, Walsh, and Zane Weiner.
During the same interview, Winslet indicated a “strong likelihood” of reprising her role in a potential second season of HBO’s acclaimed murder mystery series Mare of Easttown. She noted that discussions are ongoing with writer and creator Brad Ingelsby and director Craig Zobel, with hopes to begin production in Pennsylvania as soon as 2027.
