Kate Middleton Shares a Heartfelt Compliment That Made Prince William Smile
Prince William and Kate Middleton Make Joint Visit to Wales
On February 26, Prince William and Kate Middleton visited Wales, engaging with locals just days ahead of St. David’s Day, the Welsh national holiday celebrated on March 1. Their stop at Gallery Cafe in Newton provided them an opportunity to practice their Welsh language skills alongside a local language learning group.
During the visit, Kate offered a compliment to William that reportedly left him “blushing,” as noted by Hello!. At one point, she humorously remarked, “So you’re going to test us on our Welsh!” When a participant praised William’s Welsh abilities, Kate enthusiastically agreed, saying, “Yes, I know. He’s very smart.” In response, William appeared shy but engaged in a discussion about the challenges of learning both English and Welsh.
William mentioned that he frequently uses the language app Duolingo for his studies, adding, “I do Swahili on it, as well. But my owl is looking very sad at the moment. Not done it for a while,” reflecting on his language journey.
Following their Wales trip, both royal figures released a surprise video message in Welsh on March 1. This marked Kate’s debut speaking Welsh in a public setting. William began the message by wishing everyone in Wales a happy St. David’s Day and highlighting the beauty and rich history of the country. Kate, dressed in a red and black houndstooth dress, expressed their fondness for Wales and hoped for a joyous day filled with celebration.
Former head of royal protection Dai Davies expressed admiration for the couple’s efforts to speak Welsh, stating, “I think the majority of the Welsh nation would be happy that they are attempting to speak Welsh. For English people who are learning and trying to speak Welsh, I think it was great.” He remarked on their pronunciation, noting the challenges but commending their determination.
During the Wales visit, William lightheartedly apologized for the rainy weather, joking that they usually bring sunshine but fell short this time. Despite the recent controversies surrounding the royal family, the couple was welcomed warmly by well-wishers, including Jill Christofides, who praised William, stating, “The monarchy is safe in your hands, sir.”
Reflecting on their relationship, royal historian Amanda Foreman observed that the couple seems “more loved-up than ever,” suggesting that their experiences over the past few years have strengthened their bond. “What they have been through…either drives couples apart or, in their case, brings them together. It irons out the kinks and enables them to see each other clearly,” she remarked.
As both the Prince and Princess of Wales continue to deepen their connection with the Welsh community, their efforts to learn the language and engage with local traditions demonstrate a commitment to understanding and honoring the culture they represent.
