Kate Middleton Had Different Name Ideas for Prince George
New Biography Reveals Naming Details of Prince George
A newly released royal biography reveals that Kate Middleton initially hoped to name her first child Alexander or Alexandra. In contrast, Prince William favored a more traditional name, such as George. Ultimately, the couple decided on the name Prince George Alexander Louis, which combines both their preferences.
As Prince George approaches his role as a full-time working royal, royal expert Russell Myers sheds light on the name choice in his upcoming book, William and Catherine, The Monarchy’s New Era: The Inside Story. "Catherine had her heart set on Alexander for a boy or Alexandra (also Queen Elizabeth’s middle name) for a girl," Myers stated, highlighting the couple’s deliberations over the name.
William expressed a preference for a daughter and wanted to honor his late mother, Princess Diana, potentially through a middle name. Their name search was collaborative, as Myers notes: "The couple had been given a book of baby names by a close friend, which they spent hours thumbing through—they often ended up in fits of laughter after one or the other had presented a more left-field suggestion."
After a thorough discussion, the couple settled on the names George and Louis, with George emerging as the final choice. Prince George Alexander Louis was born in July 2013. His siblings, Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana and Prince Louis Arthur Charles, followed in 2015 and 2018, respectively.
The names of the royal children carry significant family connections. Prince George shares his name with his great-grandfather, King George VI. Prince Louis is thought to be named in honor of Lord Louis Mountbatten, a beloved uncle of Prince Philip, while Princess Charlotte’s middle name serves as a tribute to Diana.
