Kate Middleton and Prince William’s Unintentional Stress for Staff During Prince George’s Arrival
Prince George’s Birth Created Unintended Pressure on Royal Staff
On July 22, 2013, Prince William and Kate Middleton welcomed their first child, Prince George Alexander Louis. The arrival of the royal heir brought not just joy but also unexpected stress for royal staff, as detailed in Russell Myers’s recent biography of the Prince and Princess of Wales.
In the biography William and Catherine: The Monarchy’s New Era: The Inside Story, former courtiers revealed that William and Kate’s relaxed attitude toward announcing their son’s birth placed significant pressure on their team. “Everything had to be right,” said one courtier. The protocol for announcing the birth of a future king or queen is inherently fraught with complexity, and this was exacerbated by the couple’s lack of specific guidance on how to proceed.
Myers writes that while the couple appeared composed, their staff felt a sense of confusion and urgency. "On the surface, they were both incredibly relaxed, which actually made us all slightly more nervous," a former courtier recalled. The staff ultimately resorted to consulting historical documents for inspiration on how to craft the announcement, complicating the process.
Another courtier highlighted the "extraordinary" weight of expectation surrounding the announcement, noting the global significance of the event. “There was no doubt in our minds that this would be a global event, so everything had to be right,” the source stated.
As anticipation built, the press office managed a cascade of inquiries from journalists worldwide. Myers pointed out that only four individuals were privy to the security arrangements for George’s birth.
Despite the pressure, William and Kate defied traditional norms by announcing the birth via email and social media, following the more conventional step of placing an easel outside Buckingham Palace—though this was executed later. Born at 4:24 PM at the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital, Prince George’s arrival was marked with celebratory gun salutes and bell tolls at Westminster Abbey, where his parents had exchanged vows over two years prior.
The day after his birth, William and Kate presented George to the world from the steps of the Lindo Wing, although they had yet to finalize a name. Reflecting on this critical moment, William remarked, “He’s got a good pair of lungs on him, that’s for sure. He’s a big boy—he’s quite heavy. We are still working on a name, so we will have that as soon as we can.”
Years later, Kate reflected on the experience, stating, “It is extraordinary, as I’ve said. How can the human body do that? It’s utterly extraordinary, actually. And he was very sweet. And [I was] also sort of relieved that he was a happy, healthy boy.”
As the royal family continues to grow, the birth of Prince George remains a moment marked by both joy and the rigorous expectations of royal life.
