In February of last year, Colombian singer Karol G experienced a life-threatening incident shortly after taking off from Burbank on a private plane filled with 16 passengers. Smoke rapidly filled the cabin, forcing the pilots to execute emergency landing procedures. "It was terrifying," Karol G recounted in a recent interview from the L.A. Times’ offices in El Segundo, emphasizing the gravity of the moment as her family braced for a potential tragedy.
"We were saying goodbye to people. I was just thinking about my one sister that was still in Colombia," she said, reflecting on her fears amid the chaos.
Fortunately, the plane landed safely in Van Nuys, avoiding a fate similar to those of beloved artists like Jenni Rivera and Aaliyah. A year and a half later, the now 34-year-old artist released her fifth studio album, “Tropicoqueta.” The 20-track LP showcases a vibrant mix of emotions, humor, and cultural touchstones that stand in stark contrast to that harrowing experience.
“Tropicoqueta” has been nominated for a Latin pop album award at the 2026 Grammy Awards, where Karol G previously won for música urbana album in 2024. The artist, who is also set to headline Coachella in April—a historic moment as the first Latina to do so—expresses a sense of responsibility to represent her community and uplift women through her performances.
“I see it like my mission,” she stated. “I need to go and represent my Latina community and speak for my people.”
Born Carolina Giraldo Navarro in Medellín, Colombia, Karol G’s early talent was evident at a young age. Her musical journey began with appearances on Colombia’s version of “The X Factor” and continued with education in the record business in New York. Over the years, she gained attention through hit collaborations with artists like Bad Bunny and J Balvin, transforming reggaeton into a global sensation.

"This is the riskiest album in my career," Karol G shared, revealing the pressures of following up a successful predecessor. She expressed a desire to return to her roots, evoking nostalgia for the music that shaped her upbringing in Colombia.
Her duet with Solís, “Coleccionando Heridas,” resonates deeply with family dynamics—aiming to connect generations of listeners. "To be music that all the family can listen to, that’s a super special thing for me," she remarked.

"I just want to do what I feel," she said, emphasizing the importance of staying true to her roots rather than conforming to market demands.
As she prepares to headline Coachella, she reflects on the significance of her performances in reaching new audiences. "Festivals give you the opportunity to open doors for more people that don’t know your music," she noted.
