Junior Abbigail Gomez Inspires Granada Hills Kennedy Girls Basketball to Regain Its Edge
Granada Hills Kennedy Basketball Seeks Glory in City Section Finals
Granada Hills Kennedy High School’s basketball team is working to restore its legacy in the City Section. Following a strong performance that culminated in a City Division II title in 2023, the Golden Cougars are poised to compete in the City Section Division I final against El Camino Real this Saturday at 4 p.m. at Pasadena City College.
The program has a storied history, particularly during the early 1980s when Coach Craig Raub led the team to prominence. At that time, the DeCree sisters—Toya, Fonda, and Diane—were crucial to the team’s success, playing at a level that made them one of the best in the City Section and Southern California. Each sister went on to play collegiate basketball at Arizona State, Oregon State, and Texas A&M, respectively. Toya later became a coach and the mother of NBA players Justin, Jrue, and Aaron Holiday.
Among the current team, standout player Abbigail Gomez, a transfer from Highland, is averaging 15 points per game and is also a member of the school’s flag football team. Her athletic roots run deep; both of her parents were athletes at San Fernando High. Gomez made a pivotal three-pointer in the fourth quarter of a recent game against San Pedro, sealing the victory. After the shot, she acknowledged her supporters with a kiss blown to the crowd.
“That’s for my close friends and family,” Gomez stated.
With the City title within reach, enthusiasm is building for what could be a momentous game for the Golden Cougars.
