Jon Stewart Reflects on Timothée Chalamet’s Oscars Experience: A Lighthearted Look at the Art World
Jon Stewart Weighs in on Timothée Chalamet’s Controversy
Jon Stewart has contributed his thoughts to the ongoing dialogue surrounding Timothée Chalamet’s comments on classical arts. In the first episode of The Daily Show following the Oscars, Stewart humorously addressed the fallout from Chalamet’s recent remarks that "no one cares" about ballet and opera, highlighting the backlash the Academy Award-nominated actor faced after expressing his preference for not being a niche artist.
"Last night, it is clear that opera and ballet have defeated Timothée Chalamet," Stewart remarked after Chalamet lost the Best Actor award to Michael B. Jordan, star of Sinners. He continued, "No contest. A knockout! Even before they brought out prima ballerina Misty Copeland in the middle of the Sinners performance right in front of him. Boom. So, opera and ballet!"
In the wake of his controversial statements, Chalamet received a surge of invitations from ballet and opera companies. He faced extensive critiques from fellow artists, many of whom did not hold back on their opinions. The discussions surrounding his comments generated considerable online discourse for several days, also prompting Oscars host Conan O’Brien to address it in his opening monologue: "Security is extremely tight tonight. I’m told there are concerns about attacks from both the opera and ballet communities."
Stewart’s episode also delved into the current U.S. war against Iran, examining President Donald Trump’s conflicting descriptions of the military actions. During the segment, Stewart introduced a “panel of Trumps,” comprising four different personas of the President—“President Trump,” “Donald J. Trump,” “DJT,” and “John Barron," a pseudonym often associated with Trump. One of the characters, “Donnie” from Palm Beach, declared that the war would conclude "when I feel it in my bones."
Stewart countered, "All due respect to your bones, but should we really be giving them more responsibilities? Seems like they’ve got enough on their plate with getting you up and down the stairs thing."
