“Since 2006, the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation has worked to break the cycle of hunger, poverty, and homelessness,” the foundation stated. It has successfully supported nearly 1,000 units of affordable and supportive housing across 12 states for thousands, including youth and veterans. The foundation also operates the JBJ Soul Kitchen, a nonprofit community restaurant in Red Bank and Toms River, New Jersey, that serves both paying patrons and those in need.
The foundation continued, “In 2011, Bon Jovi and his wife, Dorothea Bongiovi, expanded their mission by founding JBJ Soul Kitchen, a nonprofit, pay-it-forward restaurant that has served over 234,000 healthy, three-course meals across its four New Jersey locations.” The JBJ Soul Kitchen goes beyond providing meals, fostering community through outreach programs such as job training, resume support, and partnerships with local mental health providers.
Customers at both JBJ Soul Kitchen locations are encouraged to support others’ meals, either by paying it forward or by volunteering. The organization reports that 58% of patrons have earned meals through volunteering, while 42% have contributed through donations. The annual James Beard Foundation Awards recognize excellence in the culinary industry, honoring chefs, restaurateurs, food writers, and critics throughout the U.S.
