Taylor Wilshire to Showcase Fine Art at Upcoming Exhibition
Taylor Wilshire, an accomplished illustrator and artist, draws inspiration from a rich artistic legacy. Her mother was a classical master teacher, which Wilshire describes as having made her “a true artist,” while her father’s work with the United Nations has further influenced her career. Currently, Wilshire contributes to global funding initiatives within the UN’s Economic and Social Council, blending her dual passions for art and social impact.
Wilshire recalls her artistic upbringing: “I was born into that environment of having art all over the house.” Despite this, she initially struggled to take her own painting seriously, attributing her self-criticism to the high standards surrounding her in New York’s vibrant art community. This all changed when a colleague’s sister, an art curator connected to the Guggenheim and the Met, noticed Wilshire’s work and offered to represent her. “I didn’t even know what that meant,” she remarked, reflecting on her unexpected entry into the art world.
Her debut exhibitions in New York and London are set for 2024, but prior to that, a special exhibition of her fine art will take place at City Club Los Angeles on April 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. Attendees can look forward to light hors d’oeuvres and a limited hosted bar featuring wine, beer, and sodas. “City Club is a membership-only club, and the view is breathtaking,” Wilshire emphasized, inviting visitors to not only appreciate her art but also enjoy a stunning perspective of the city.
Wilshire defines her works as fine art, emphasizing their aesthetic intent and cultural significance rather than utilitarian purposes. “The painting should have its own visual language, where ideas and technique and originality come together to express meaning,” she explained.
Her art can be categorized into three modalities: art nouveau, characterized by intricate and whimsical designs; landscapes, which she describes as imaginative; and modern art. Wilshire elaborates on her creative process, stating, “Each painting takes years and years.” She attributes the depth and clarity of her pieces to her meticulous use of resin and tiny brushes, creating works that appear both three-dimensional and ethereal.
Viewers have described her paintings as feeling alive. Wilshire shares that while her landscapes are entirely imaginary, they evoke a sense of place. Some fans have noted similarities to the works of Mark Rothko, a compliment that Wilshire treasures given her admiration for the artist.
“Each piece has a significant intention,” she explained, noting the need for art in an age marked by rapid change and division. Her goal is to evoke feelings of stillness and elevation. The absence of titles for her works is intentional, as she believes each observer brings unique perspectives, turning the viewing experience into a personal journey of transformation and inspiration.
Wilshire, who collaborates with monks in India, seeks to highlight a deeper connection among individuals. She aspires for her art to spark healing and resilience, stating, “I want that feeling of resilience, not just hope, but real transformation.”
