John Oliver Shares His Passion for Joining a Daytime Soap Opera
John Oliver Seeks Role in Daytime Soap Opera
In a surprising turn during the latest episode of Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver made an impassioned appeal for a guest role on a daytime soap opera. Allocating over ten minutes of the show, Oliver expressed his deep admiration for soap operas, all while addressing serious subjects like the Donald Trump administration and the recent reductions in USAID.
The motivation for Oliver’s request was sparked by TV personality Stephen A. Smith’s recurring role as “Brick” on General Hospital, which he admitted left him feeling “jealous.”
“To all the soap operas out there, let me say this: I am officially offering myself to you. Write me a role, and I’ll be on your set so fast, it’ll make your head spin,” Oliver declared. He outlined his conditions, emphasizing his desire to portray a character rather than playing himself, and wished for the role’s name to be “ridiculous.” Along with a craving for a “juicy” storyline—perhaps involving murder or dramatic confrontations—he insisted on being given a close-up shot of his face during pivotal moments. “But in return, trust me, I will give my all to this performance,” he added.
To demonstrate his acting prowess, Oliver reenacted a scene reminiscent of a dramatic shootout from General Hospital, enlisting actor Jack McBrayer, acclaimed for his role on 30 Rock, to assist him. McBrayer portrayed Colonel Sanders, referencing George Hamilton’s memorable performance as the KFC founder on the soap in 2018.
In addition to his soap opera aspirations, Oliver tackled critical international issues, including the recent U.S. and Israeli strike on Iran. He noted that Trump himself acknowledged the potential fallout, which could result in the rise of a new leader who may not be notably benevolent.
“It is jarring to hear such a lucid analysis of his own actions in the Middle East there. You don’t expect that from him. It’s like hearing him say, ‘Have you read the latest issue of The New Yorker?’ Or seeing him in the Criterion Closet,” Oliver humorously remarked.
