John Cameron Mitchell Brings 25th Anniversary 4K Restoration of ‘Hedwig & the Angry Inch’ to Fans Across the Country
As the iconic musical film Hedwig & the Angry Inch marks its 25th anniversary, fans are invited to celebrate the occasion with a tour featuring its writer, director, and star, John Cameron Mitchell. The event will showcase a 4K restoration of the beloved 2001 cult classic, with the tour commencing on June 14 in Orlando, Florida.
Mitchell will be actively involved in the tour, produced by Jeremy Wein for ThisMyShow Presents. He is scheduled to participate in a live post-screening discussion, audience Q&A sessions, and a special acoustic performance, along with meet-and-greet opportunities for attendees.
Reflecting on the film’s journey, Mitchell stated, “When we made the Hedwig film, with the help of hundreds of people, we weren’t surprised when it was initially a flop—just like Rocky Horror, Willy Wonka and The Wizard of Oz. New things take time. It took word-of-mouth, home video, people passing it one by one to their friends and lovers to get it around the world to the people who needed it. We had no idea it would travel this far. Twenty-five years later, in the face of the current backlash of hate and fear, I’m moved that audiences still see themselves in it—and still want to gather in a room together to experience it.”
Hedwig & the Angry Inch, based on the stage musical co-created by Mitchell and Stephen Trask, tells the story of an East German rock musician who marries an American GI and undergoes a sex change operation to move to the U.S. There, the protagonist falls in love with a young musician, Tommy, who ultimately steals their music and becomes famous.
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2001, where it received both the Audience Award (Dramatic) and the Directing Award (Dramatic) for Mitchell, further establishing its cultural significance.
