John C. McGinley Shares Insights on Dr. Cox’s Surprising Moments and Teases Jordan’s Return in the Season 1 Finale of ‘Scrubs’
SPOILER ALERT: The story includes details about Episode 108 of ABC’s Scrubs, titled “My Odds.”
In a highly anticipated return, Dr. Cox, played by John McGinley, reappeared in the latest episode of Scrubs. This marked McGinley’s first appearance since the revival began, where Dr. Cox’s retirement was announced, passing the torch to J.D. (Zach Braff) as the new Chief of Medicine.
However, Dr. Cox’s return to Sacred Heart was not to oversee his successor. By the conclusion of the episode, he is revealed to be a patient at the hospital, diagnosed with microscopic polyangiitis, an incurable autoimmune disease. This development elicited an emotional response from the usually cynical character, leading to reconciliation with Elliot (Sarah Chalke) and a heartfelt conversation with J.D., in which he reluctantly agreed to have his former student as his doctor.
McGinley also hinted at the upcoming return of another original cast member, Christa Miller, who reprises her role as Cox’s ex, Jordan, in the Season 1 finale airing next week. He pointed out that Dr. Cox’s diagnosis does not equate to a death sentence and suggested that he would appear in a larger capacity in future episodes should Scrubs be renewed, which is highly anticipated due to the show’s strong performance.
The episode’s narrative, shaped by revival showrunner Aseem Batra, saw McGinley delving into the technical elements of the storyline. Reflecting on his preparation, he noted the importance of understanding the complexities of the disease through consultations with technical advisors, allowing him to authentically portray Dr. Cox’s challenges.
In a conversation about the character’s grim perspective, McGinley explained, “Some people are prone to being fatalists, and when you’ve been inundated with these challenges for over 30 years, it can be a heavy burden.” He expressed appreciation for an episode that explored Dr. Cox’s vulnerability, revealing a side of the character that is rarely seen.
As the narrative unfolded, a poignant moment arose when Dr. Cox asked J.D. to promise to keep him alive for a long time, revealing his fears about the impact of his death on J.D.’s outlook on life. This line struck McGinley, who recognized its depth and the emotional weight it carried.
The scenes between Cox and Elliot were reminiscent of personal experiences McGinley had with his father in hospice, emphasizing the importance of reconciliation before it’s too late. "If we have an opportunity to reconcile relationships, then I think you have an obligation to do it," he remarked.
Looking ahead, McGinley expressed optimism about the show’s potential future, suggesting that Dr. Cox would likely play a more significant role in Season 2. He noted the strong audience demand for more of the character and hinted that the intricacies of the plot would benefit from Dr. Cox’s presence.
As the finale approaches, the anticipation for a renewed Scrubs builds, alongside excitement for McGinley’s continued exploration of Dr. Cox’s character and the dynamic interplay with the beloved cast.
