John Boyega to Appear in BBC Documentary on the Heartbreaking Story of Damilola Taylor
John Boyega to Discuss Damilola Taylor’s Tragic Death in Upcoming BBC Documentary
In a poignant revelation, actor John Boyega will share his experiences as one of the last people to see Damilola Taylor alive in an upcoming BBC documentary titled Damilola Taylor: The Last 24 Hours (working title). Taylor, a ten-year-old boy, was fatally stabbed in a stairwell in Peckham, South East London, in 2000, just steps from his home.
Boyega, who also grew up in Peckham, will reflect on the fear and uncertainty that enveloped the community following Taylor’s tragic death. Joining him will be close friends and family members, who will recount the events leading to Taylor’s murder and discuss the profound impact it has had on their lives.
The shocking nature of Taylor’s death reverberated throughout the United Kingdom, prompting a national dialogue about the escalating issue of knife crime. Previously, a BBC drama, Damilola: Our Loved Boy, won two BAFTAs, including accolades for actor Wunmi Mosaku.
Directed by Alex Thomas, a double Grierson Award-winning filmmaker known for Bibaa & Nicole: Murder in the Park, the documentary retraces Taylor’s final day, exploring his movements and the societal pressures that shaped the lives of young people in that era.
Jack Bootle, the BBC’s Head of Commissioning for Specialist Factual, remarked, “The killing of Damilola Taylor shocked the UK and changed the lives of those closest to him forever. This film traces their stories – and honours Damilola’s memory through the voices of those who knew him best.”
Thomas emphasized the significance of the documentary, stating, “Damilola’s story has never been told through the experience of the young people who were living it at the time. This film shows what it meant to grow up in an environment shaped by fear, bullying, and the need to protect yourself — and how those pressures influenced the choices people made. Twenty-five years on, those experiences still stay with them, and many of those pressures still exist for young people today.”
Damilola Taylor: The Last 24 Hours was commissioned by Bootle and developed by Ruby Rookes. The executive producer is Becky Cadman, while creative oversight is provided by Nick Hornby and Tina Flintoff. Nelson Adeosun serves as the producer, with global distribution handled by All3Media International.
