John Alford, Former British Soap Star, Passes Away at 54 While in Prison
John Alford, British Actor, Dies at 54 in Custody
John Alford, a British actor known for his roles in popular television series, has passed away at the age of 54 while serving time in prison.
Alford, who gained fame for his portrayal of Robbie Wright on the BBC’s youth soap Grange Hill and as Billy Junfan Ray in ITV’s London’s Burning, died in custody after being convicted of sexually assaulting two teenage girls. Following his acting career, he returned to his birth name, John Shannon.
A spokesperson for the Prison Service confirmed to the BBC, “John Shannon died in prison on 13 March 2026. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.”
In January, Alford was sentenced to eight and a half years after being convicted of four counts of sexual activity with a 14-year-old as well as charges related to a 15-year-old girl, including sexual assault and assault by penetration. The incidents took place in Hertfordshire, UK, in 2022, and Alford stood trial at St Albans Crown Court in September.
This was not the first time Alford faced legal troubles. In 1999, he was convicted of supplying drugs and received a nine-month prison sentence following an investigation by the News of the World. In subsequent years, he also faced convictions for drunk driving in 2006 and for resisting arrest in 2018, for which he received a community order.
Alford initially rose to fame through Grange Hill, which aired from 1978 to 2008. He later joined the cast of London’s Burning but was dismissed from the show after his 1999 conviction.
In the years following these controversies, Alford had limited acting opportunities, appearing in films such as Mike Bassett: England Manager and The Hatton Garden Job. He also made an appearance on Channel 5’s reality series Trust Me – I’m a Beauty Therapist in 2006.
