Jodie Foster Talks About How Her Early Oscar Nomination Helped Her Avoid Sexual Abuse in Hollywood
Jodie Foster Reflects on Early Career and Avoidance of Hollywood Misconduct
Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster has shared her belief that accumulating power at a young age helped her evade incidents of sexual misconduct in Hollywood. During a recent interview with NPR’s Fresh Air, Foster discussed her career and the unique circumstances that may have contributed to her safety in an industry often marred by predatory behavior.
Foster, known for her role in Taxi Driver, expressed that her 1977 Oscar nomination for the film, in which she portrayed a teenage sex worker, likely played a crucial role in shielding her from potential predators. "I’ve really had to examine that, like, how did I get saved?" she pondered. Despite acknowledging the presence of microaggressions in the workplace, she reflected on what kept her from experiencing more severe situations.
She attributed part of her protection to the significant power she had acquired by the time she turned 12. "I was part of a different category of people that had power and I was too dangerous to touch," she explained, asserting that her status could have serious consequences for anyone who attempted to exploit her.
In light of receiving an honor at the Marrakech Film Festival last year, Foster has been reflecting on her lengthy career. She also noted that her determined personality may have contributed to her ability to fend off unacceptable behavior. "It’s very difficult to emotionally manipulate me because I don’t operate with my emotions on the surface," she stated. "Predators use whatever they can in order to manipulate and get people to do what they want them to do."
Following her nomination for Taxi Driver, Foster went on to win two Academy Awards: first for The Accused in 1989 and later for The Silence of the Lambs in 1992. "I think there’s a part of me that has been made resilient by what I’ve done for a living," she noted regarding her ability to manage her emotions throughout her career.
Foster’s insights shed light on the complex dynamics of power and protection in the entertainment industry, emphasizing the importance of awareness and resilience in navigating its challenges.
