Jo Adell’s Big Day Helps Angels Beat Mariners with Three Home Runs
Angels Edge Mariners Behind Spectacular Plays from Jo Adell
In a thrilling match at Angel Stadium, Jo Adell showcased his defensive prowess with three remarkable home run-robbing catches, including a breathtaking leap into the right-field seats in the ninth inning. His efforts helped secure a narrow 1-0 victory for the Los Angeles Angels over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night.
Starting pitcher Jack Kochanowicz earned his first win of the season, allowing just four hits and striking out seven across 5⅔ innings. The only run of the game came from rookie sensation Zach Neto, who launched a 443-foot homer off Mariners right-hander Emerson Hancock in the first inning. Angels reliever Chase Silseth played a critical role as well, maneuvering out of a jam in the seventh with two runners on base.
The tension peaked in the ninth when J.P. Crawford sent a drive toward the right-field corner. Adell’s leap not only snatched the ball from the air but also sent him tumbling over the wall into the first row of seats. After a replay review confirmed the catch, Adell raised his glove in triumph.
Earlier in the game, Adell denied Cal Raleigh a potential solo homer in the first inning and thwarted another attempt by Josh Naylor in the eighth with similar acrobatic catches.
After Adell’s pivotal play, Jordan Romano, the Angels’ sixth pitcher, closed the game by retiring Cole Young on an infield pop-up and striking out Leo Rivas for his third save of the season.
Kochanowicz faced challenges, notably escaping a first-and-third situation in the first inning and another in the third. His composure under pressure kept the Mariners off the board throughout.
The Angels’ defense was further highlighted by impressive plays from left fielder Josh Lowe, who made a diving catch in the fourth, and second baseman Oswald Peraza, who displayed quick reflexes to stop a grounder and nail the runner at first.
Emerson Hancock, who pitched well despite the outcome, surrendered six hits in 6 2/3 innings and struck out five batters, contrasting with his previous no-hit performance against Cleveland.
Looking ahead, the Mariners’ RHP Luis Castillo (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is scheduled to face off against Angels’ RHP Ryan Johnson (0-1, 16.20 ERA) in the series finale on Sunday.
