Jim Caviezel to Star in Upcoming Biopic About Jair Bolsonaro, the Former President of Brazil
Jim Caviezel to Portray Jair Bolsonaro in Upcoming Biopic
Actor Jim Caviezel, renowned for his role as Jesus in Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, is set to play former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro in a forthcoming biopic. The film, titled Dark Horse, has been scripted by Mário Frias, Bolsonaro’s former Culture Secretary.
Dark Horse is expected to present a favorable view of Bolsonaro, a highly polarizing figure in Brazilian politics. Bolsonaro’s son, Carlos, recently shared a photo of Caviezel in character on X, expressing, “I know your legacy will continue to be admired by good people and envied by those who seek destruction – yet the message you imprint with every step leaves its mark on the world.”
According to World of Reel, filming began three months ago and the production is being shot in English. The narrative reportedly focuses on Bolsonaro’s 2018 presidential campaign, directed by Cyrus Nowraste.
This announcement comes shortly after Brazil’s Supreme Court mandated that Bolsonaro commence a prison sentence of 27 years and three months for his involvement in a coup attempt following his electoral defeat. The former president has maintained close ties with Donald Trump, who has publicly criticized Bolsonaro’s imprisonment.
Caviezel’s filmography includes notable works such as The Thin Red Line and The Count of Monte Cristo. While he gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Jesus, he has since shifted towards less mainstream projects. His recent appearance in the controversial film Sound of Freedom has drawn additional attention, alongside his participation in various QAnon-affiliated events.
