Jessica Gunning Joins the Cast of Apple TV’s New Series Inspired by the ‘Berlin Noir’ Books
EXCLUSIVE: Apple TV’s upcoming untitled series inspired by Philip Kerr’s acclaimed Metropolis and the Berlin Noir book series has expanded its cast with the addition of seven actors. Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning star Jessica Gunning, known for her work in Baby Reindeer, joins BAFTA nominees Maxine Peake (Say Nothing), Daniel Mays (Line of Duty), and Sam Riley (Rebecca), alongside Roger Allam (Endeavor), Liz Kingsman (F1), and Carys Daniels (Casualty).
Gunning will portray Bertha Herzner, with Peake taking on the role of Mila Gilhausen. Mays will play Hari Voss, Riley will embody Robert Lanz, Allam will step into the shoes of Ernst Gennat, Kingsman will depict Rosa Bauer, and Daniels will appear as Dora Meysel.
The series will also feature Jack Lowden and Colin Firth in key roles, with production currently underway in Berlin.
The Berlin Noir series revolves around the character of detective Bernie Gunther, whose origin story unfolds in 1928. In the show, Bernie (Lowden) finds himself as a newly promoted officer within the prestigious Berlin Murder Squad. He investigates a series of murders that appear to target society’s most vulnerable. Set against a backdrop of significant political and social change, Bernie’s journey highlights his struggle for truth amid a rapidly shifting landscape, with the looming threat of the Nazis hovering just out of view.
Produced by Bad Wolf, known for Industry, and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s PlayTone, the series is written by Peter Straughan (Conclave) and directed by Tom Shankland (House of Guinness) and Luke Snellin (Industry). Straughan will serve as an executive producer alongside Shankland and fellow producers Jane Tranter, Dan McCulloch, and Ryan Rasmussen for Bad Wolf, as well as Hanks and Goetzman for PlayTone, with Studio Babelsberg and Jane Thynne co-producing.
