Jelly Roll Reflects on Weight Loss Journey and Near-Death Experience
During a recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience on December 10, musician Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, opened up about his personal struggles and transformative weight-loss journey. The 41-year-old artist shared that turning 39 prompted him to confront his health, saying, “I don’t think I’ve ever met a 500-pound, 40-year-old.”
Jelly Roll revealed that he had experienced “multiple heart issues” and felt his life was in jeopardy. "I could feel myself dying," he stated, emphasizing the urgency of his decision to prioritize his health.
The singer began to seriously consider making a change around his 39th birthday in 2023. "I started really considering taking the step to try to make a major change in my life," he recalled, noting his realization about the implications of reaching his next milestone birthday.
Rogan responded, citing a common realization among people facing similar health challenges.
Jelly Roll expressed a sense of having "cheated the game," explaining: "It felt like I’d already cheated the game." His weight had fluctuated significantly, hovering between 480 and 560 pounds over the past year.
A Deliberate Approach to Weight Loss
After grappling with obesity most of his life, Jelly Roll decided to adopt a more thoughtful approach to weight loss. He articulated, "I’m going to really take my time with it and I’m going to think about what I’m doing and be intentional. I’m not going to let it be an emotional thing."
His commitment to a healthier lifestyle has yielded impressive results; he has lost nearly 200 pounds since 2022. This shift involved not only a focus on diet and exercise but also a mental transformation, as he acknowledged the challenges of addressing food addiction. He explained, “I realized overeating wasn’t a failure of willpower for me. It was a biological loop that I didn’t know how to interrupt.”
Rogan added, highlighting the unique challenges of food addiction: “The problem with food addiction, as opposed to every other addiction, is that you have to keep doing the thing you’re addicted to."
Embracing Life and Looking Ahead
Reflecting on his past mindset, Jelly Roll shared, “I had never planned on living. When I die, at least my kids might be okay and they won’t be ashamed of me." He recalled feeling that disaster could strike at any moment.
Now, he finds hope in his renewed outlook on life. "To sit here and look at you now like, ‘Dog, I’m going to be a 70-year-old man with you, Bubba’… it’s going to be cool," he expressed, underscoring the contrast between his past and present feelings about life.
“I never would have thought I could have this kind of life,” he concluded, capturing the essence of his remarkable journey toward health and happiness.
