Jazzy Davidson Leads USC to Victory, Overcoming Early Challenges for Fifth Straight Win
USC Women’s Basketball Secures Victory Against Indiana
The USC Trojans overcame a challenging performance to defeat the Indiana Hoosiers 79-73 on Thursday night, marking their fifth consecutive victory. Coming off a four-game winning streak, including noteworthy wins over No. 8 Iowa, Rutgers, Northwestern, and Illinois, USC has solidified its position in the NCAA tournament landscape. However, with four regular-season games remaining—two against top-10 teams—the Trojans remain cautious not to become complacent.
The matchup featured a dynamic Indiana squad that kept USC on its toes throughout the game. USC struggled offensively aside from a strong second quarter, where they achieved a 52% shooting rate. Overall, the Trojans have maintained a shooting difficulty from beyond the arc, hitting just 25% from three-point range over the last two weeks.
Freshman Jazzy Davidson emerged as a standout player once again, following her career-high 27-point game with a solid 24 points against Indiana. Davidson further contributed with six rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks, showcasing her versatility on the court.
As the game neared its conclusion, USC found itself in a precarious position, leading by only two points with less than two minutes remaining. However, Kennedy Smith helped seal the victory by intercepting a potential lay-in from Indiana’s Lenee Davenport in the final moments.
The Hoosiers, missing their top scorer Shay Ciezki and third-leading scorer Zania Socka-Nguemen, managed to keep pace with the Trojans for much of the night. Despite these absences, Indiana’s offense remained competitive.
USC’s early performance suggested they were still regaining their footing, enduring a six-minute scoring drought in the first quarter, followed by an 8-0 run by Indiana late in the period. However, Davidson ignited a resurgence in the second quarter, scoring 10 points, while the Trojans’ defense tightened.
With Indiana focusing on Davidson, teammates Kara Dunn and Smith stepped up, pushing USC ahead after halftime. The game remained tight, with Indiana tying the score early in the fourth quarter. A foul against USC guard Malia Samuels granted the Trojans key free throws, allowing them to gain a seven-point lead with four minutes left. Despite a late push from Indiana, led by Maya Makalusky, who finished with 27 points, USC managed to hold onto their victory.
As USC looks ahead, the team will need to build on this momentum while facing increasingly competitive opponents in the coming games.
