Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández Joins Fox’s World Cup Broadcast Team
Javier “Chicharito” Hernández to Join Fox Sports as World Cup Analyst
Former Galaxy forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, a standout for Mexico in three World Cups, is set to take on a new role this summer as a studio analyst for Fox Sports. Hernández approaches this departure from the field with the same excitement that characterized his playing career.
“It’s the same as our sport: if you do a mistake, you cannot change it,” he stated. “I’ve always been a guy who sees opportunities, who sees the positives. I’m going to try to deliver my best point of view on each game, player, and the tournament.”
Hernández received multiple offers to broadcast the World Cup in Spanish but opted for an English platform. “I’m not going to be speaking in my first language. And that’s something I think my Mexican fellows can be inspired by, right? That I don’t go to my comfort zone,” he explained. “I want to make all of this an experience for myself. But I can also show people that whatever you have in your mind, you can achieve it.”
At 37, Hernández remains Mexico’s all-time leading scorer, with 52 goals, including four in World Cup appearances. He began and ended his club career with Chivas de Guadalajara, while also playing for five clubs in Europe. His tenure with the Galaxy included four injury-riddled seasons, where he scored 38 goals and earned two All-Star selections.
Though he last represented the Mexican national team in 2019, Hernández maintains connections with players currently on the squad. He was selected for his first World Cup team by coach Javier Aguirre, who will lead El Tri again this summer. Despite these ties, Hernández is committed to providing objective commentary. “Truth always needs to be there,” he asserted. “When someone needs to say hard truths, you have to say it. I’m going to see how I feel. Maybe I end up being the most critical person, or maybe Mexico does amazingly and I don’t have to criticize.”
He will be joining a seasoned Fox broadcast team that includes former Galaxy players Cobi Jones, Landon Donovan, Zlatan Ibrahimović, and Alexi Lalas. Notably, Hernández is the only member of the group who has not formally announced his retirement from professional play.
“I will speak about that later on,” he remarked, reflecting on his final club game last November. “I just want to focus on this amazing opportunity.”
