Jamie Bell Steps into the Role of Duke Shelby in “Peaky Blinders” Sequel; Charlie Heaton and Three Others Join the Cast – Here’s Your First Look
Jamie Bell and Charlie Heaton to Star in New ‘Peaky Blinders’ Series
Jamie Bell and Charlie Heaton are set to headline the latest installment of the Peaky Blinders series, created by Steven Knight for Netflix and the BBC. Joining them in the cast are Jessica Brown Findlay, Lashana Lynch, and Lucy Karczewski. The period drama is currently filming at Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham and has been ordered for two six-episode seasons.
In this new chapter, Bell will portray Duke Shelby, the eldest son of the character Tommy Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy in the original series. Duke was previously portrayed by Conrad Khan in the sixth season and Barry Keoghan in the recent film, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which debuted on Netflix.
A recasting was anticipated given that the sequel series is set a decade after the events of The Immortal Man. While details about Heaton’s character remain undisclosed, the announcement suggests that he may play a significant role in the new generation of the Shelby family alongside Duke. This marks Heaton’s return to Netflix after his role as Jonathan Byers in the popular series Stranger Things.
“I am thrilled that we are announcing a new era of Peaky Blinders, moving the story to post-war Birmingham in the early 50s,” said Knight. “We are incredibly fortunate to have Jamie Bell taking the role of Tommy Shelby’s oldest son, Duke, and to have Charlie Heaton also leading the cast. There are more exciting cast announcements to come, and Peaky is on the road again.”
According to the official logline, the new era of Peaky Blinders unfolds ten years after World War II, where the struggle to rebuild Birmingham transforms into a brutal contest. At the center is Duke Shelby, portrayed by Bell, depicted as older, wiser, more ambitious, and increasingly dangerous.
Details about Brown Findlay, Lynch, and Karczewski’s roles have not yet been revealed.
The Peaky Blinders sequel is produced by Banijay UK’s Kudos and Garrison Drama, with plans for it to air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK, alongside global streaming through Netflix.
Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which Knight wrote and Tom Harper directed, stars Murphy and features returning cast members Sophie Rundle, Ned Dennehy, and Packy Lee, among others. Released on March 20, it has been Netflix’s No. 1 movie globally for two consecutive weeks.
The original Peaky Blinders premiered on BBC Two in 2013, later becoming available on Netflix in 2014. It won a BAFTA for Best Drama Series for its fourth season in 2018 and later transitioned to BBC One for its fifth and sixth seasons. The series has grown into a global phenomenon with various tie-ins, including books, clothing lines, a video game, ballet, and immersive theatrical productions.
