ITV Drama Features Jonathan Pryce and Penelope Wilton in the Story of Mavis Eccleston, a Woman Accused of Her Husband’s Murder After Their Suicide Pact
Oscar-Nominee Jonathan Pryce and Penelope Wilton to Star in ITV Drama Based on Real-Life Assisted Dying Case
Oscar-nominee Jonathan Pryce and Downton Abbey star Penelope Wilton will collaborate on a new ITV drama that delves into the harrowing story of a woman involved in a joint suicide pact with her terminally ill partner, who was later charged with his murder.
The drama, titled Mavis Eccleston, draws inspiration from the real-life experiences of Mavis Eccleston, portrayed by Wilton, while Pryce will take on the role of her husband, Dennis. The script is penned by Chris Lang, known for The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe, and directed by Bruce Goodison, recognized for Doctor Foster.
Tom Brittney, a star from Grantchester, first encountered Eccleston and brought her poignant story to producer Corestar Media, which subsequently acquired the dramatic rights. Initially titled Goodnight Darling, the project was developed further with input from author Deborah Moggach, known for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
Mavis and Dennis Eccleston’s decision to end their lives together has generated significant controversy. Following Dennis’s terminal cancer diagnosis, the couple attempted to overdose, but only Mavis survived. In 2019, she was acquitted of her husband’s murder. ITV announced that Mavis Eccleston and her family have supported the production and contributed to the script development process.
The timing of the series is particularly relevant, as the UK Parliament is currently reviewing controversial legislation to legalize assisted dying. ITV sees Mavis Eccleston as a significant entry into its lineup of impactful dramas, building on previous successes like Mr Bates vs the Post Office and an upcoming production focused on the contaminated blood scandal.
Pryce’s involvement marks his first project for ITV. Known for his Oscar-nominated role in The Two Popes, as well as appearances in The Crown, Slow Horses, and Game of Thrones, Pryce joins Wilton, who garnered acclaim for her portrayal of Isobel Crawley in Downton Abbey.
“This is a powerful and timely story of an extraordinary, devoted couple as they face the painful dilemma of assisted dying,” Pryce remarked. “We will hopefully honour their deep love for each other and their bravery.”
Wilton emphasized the profound nature of Mavis’s experience, stating, “Mavis was devoted to her husband, Dennis, their enduring love for each other clear to see. The fact she then faced the very real prospect of spending the rest of her life in prison for acting out of love is simply unimaginable. To be asked to bring her experience to life is a huge responsibility and true honour.”
Production financing for the drama is provided by Calculus Media, while international sales and distribution will be managed by High Road Entertainment, led by James Durie and Richard Tulk-Hart. Corestar Media and Indefinite Films are co-producing, with Polly Hill overseeing the project for ITV. Executive producers include Richard Hart, Ross Murray, Brittney, Goodison, and Lang.
Hill concluded, “This is a poignant and powerful real-life story, and I’m indebted to the team at Corestar and Indefinite Films for entrusting Mavis Eccleston to ITV, where important, socially relevant stories can be told and brought to the attention of a mass audience.”
