Irvine Teen Shares Experience After Science Experiment Leads to FBI Investigation
Investigation into Irvine Teen’s Science Experiment Deemed a Misunderstanding
An Irvine teen whose science project prompted a significant response from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and local hazardous materials teams has spoken out, asserting that the incident was rooted in a misunderstanding. Seventeen-year-old Amalvin Fritz emphasized that he was simply conducting a legitimate experiment when law enforcement intervened.
Before the federal investigation commenced, Fritz was mixing water and rubbing alcohol with common chemicals found in products like Epsom salts and nail polish remover in his family home. His passion for science drives him to explore breakthroughs in medicine, specifically in areas such as cancer biology, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s disease.
"What my interest truly was in is in creating these molecules called Cubanes, which have a three-dimensional structure that can be manipulated to allow these molecules to bind efficiently," Fritz explained. "This has a profound impact across many fields, and this has been a truly personal battle for me because I lost my aunt to cancer in 2020."
The federal investigation began last month following reports of suspicious chemical activity at Fritz’s residence. FBI agents, alongside hazardous materials crews, responded to the scene, which has been monitored since Monday afternoon. They were joined by a specialized unit of the California National Guard trained to handle potential threats involving weapons of mass destruction.
Charles M. Ray, the family’s attorney, reiterated that the situation was a misunderstanding, clarifying that Fritz was engaged in standard experiments. Ray also highlighted Fritz’s educational YouTube channel, where he shares instructional chemistry videos aimed at fostering scientific knowledge.
“We categorically deny the allegations that have been suggested and reject any implication that he poses a threat in any way, shape, or form,” Ray stated. “There is no credible evidence to support the narrative that has begun to circulate, and we are confident that when the facts are reviewed objectively, that will become clear."
Fritz maintained that he was using protective equipment during his experiments and believed he was not engaged in anything hazardous. However, experts noted that such experiments should ideally be conducted in a controlled environment rather than at home.
The FBI is continuing its investigation, and as of now, no charges have been filed against any parties involved.
