Insights on Dune: Part Three from Villeneuve, Zendaya, Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert Pattinson, and Javier Bardem on Characters, Timeline, and New Beginnings
Denis Villeneuve Unveils Details About Dune: Part Three
In a recent panel discussion, director Denis Villeneuve and his cast provided insights into Dune: Part Three, revealing that the film will take place 17 years after the events of Part Two. They discussed how the actors will age to match this timeline, introduced new characters, and hinted at the journeys of key figures like Paul Atreides and Chani. Villeneuve also addressed the return of a pivotal character, explaining the narrative decision behind it.
One of the most significant revelations, highlighted in the film’s trailer, is the reunion of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides and Zendaya’s Chani, who are contemplating starting a family. The trailer opens with Chani asking Paul, “If we have a girl, what will we name her?”
During the conversation, Zendaya playfully sidestepped a question about their characters’ potential children, opting to defer to Villeneuve, while Javier Bardem humorously claimed, “I am their kid. It’s a big twist.”
Villeneuve explained that the 17-year time gap allows for a deeper exploration of Paul’s struggles with power and the cycle of violence. “He’s an emperor who can see the future, so he’s kind of invincible,” he noted.
The new cast member, Florence Pugh, who plays Princess Irulan, expressed curiosity about Chani’s feelings toward her: “So at the end of the last movie, you ran away. I got Paul. Where are you now? Are you still mad at me?” Zendaya responded warmly, hinting at more interactions between the two characters in the forthcoming film.
In a light-hearted exchange, Robert Pattinson, who joins the cast as Scytale, recalled speaking with Zendaya about joining the Dune franchise while they were on set for another project. He described his character as complex, stating he is “an unusual character in the book” whose true loyalties are ambiguous.
Villeneuve elaborated on the film’s new tone, stating, “It will be a very different film…more action-packed and more tense.” He emphasized that while the film will reflect new themes, the core relationship between Paul and Chani remains central to the story.
The director mentioned the film’s visual elements, noting that he opted for a combination of Imax film and digital shooting techniques. This choice was made to enhance the storytelling and create a visceral experience for viewers.
Villeneuve also teased new locations, saying audiences will encounter areas of the planet previously unseen in the franchise, along with new planets. Anya Taylor-Joy will portray Paul’s sister, Alia, who faces her own complex narrative as she navigates her identity.
Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho will make a significant return, an event Villeneuve deemed crucial at this stage in the story. Momoa humorously questioned why his character was previously killed, illustrating the camaraderie among the cast.
In closing, Villeneuve described Dune: Part Three as a deeply personal film that examines the relationship between Paul and Chani amidst the forces that challenge them. Chalamet acknowledged Villeneuve’s vision in a pre-recorded video, thanking him for his dedication to bringing the Dune trilogy to life.
As anticipation builds, fans eagerly await the next chapter in the Dune saga.
