Imax CEO Richard Gelfond to Take Short Medical Leave
Imax CEO on Medical Leave for Pneumonia Treatment
Imax CEO Rich Gelfond is currently on a temporary medical leave as he receives treatment for pneumonia, the company announced today. During his absence, Gelfond will not participate in any public or private company events.
According to Imax, Gelfond is making progress in his recovery. In line with its operational plan, senior executives are coordinating daily responsibilities under the guidance of Board Chairman Darren Throop, maintaining regular communication with the full board of directors.
Gelfond, 70, has been with Imax since 1994, initially serving as co-chairman before becoming CEO in 2009. The company’s senior leadership team includes CFO Natasha Fernandes, Chief Marketing Officer Anne Globe, Chief Legal Officer Rob Lister, and President of Imax Theaters Mark Welton.
In a statement, Imax emphasized its commitment to transparency, noting that it wishes to mitigate speculation regarding Gelfond’s absence from upcoming events, including next week’s industry conferences. The company stated, “Out of respect for Mr. Gelfond’s privacy as he is being treated, Imax will not provide further comment at this time, but will provide updates as appropriate.”
The CinemaCon trade show, where Imax has risen in prominence due to its advanced equipment and successful auditoriums, is scheduled to begin April 13 in Las Vegas.
Throop expressed confidence in the leadership team, stating, “We have a strong, deeply experienced senior executive team who are fully engaged, providing regular updates to the board, and remain focused as always on the continued growth and success of Imax. We are all wishing Rich well and a full and speedy recovery.”
