Hubert Davis’s ‘Youngblood’ Reboot Has Been Picked Up by Well Go USA
Well Go USA Acquires U.S. Rights to ‘Youngblood’ for 2026 Release
Well Go USA Entertainment has secured the U.S. distribution rights to Youngblood, directed by Academy Award nominee Hubert Davis, known for works like The Well and Black Ice. The film will debut in theaters across North America on March 6, 2026, coinciding with Canadian distributor Photon Films and Media’s release.
Youngblood, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this fall, is a modern reimagining of the 1986 MGM film featuring Rob Lowe. This adaptation follows the journey of hockey prodigy Dean Youngblood, who leaves Detroit for Canada to join the Hamilton Mustangs in pursuit of his professional dreams. Raised by a father who instilled toughness and discipline, Dean’s impressive talent is often overshadowed by his arrogance, leading to conflicts both on and off the ice. As he grapples with toxic behavior and personal challenges, Dean must choose what kind of player and individual he wants to become.
Produced by Aircraft Pictures in collaboration with Dolphin Entertainment and Photon Films and Media, Youngblood aims to resonate with a new generation of viewers. Doris Pfardrescher, President and CEO of Well Go USA, expressed enthusiasm about the film, stating, “Dean Youngblood’s journey is more than a classic sports story; it is a powerful examination of courage, identity, and the pressures that shape us. The film blends electrifying on-ice action with heartfelt character heroism, taking the audience on an emotional ride.”
Bill O’Dowd, CEO of Dolphin Entertainment, also shared his excitement about the collaboration: “The timing of the release is ideal for marketing efforts that will coincide with both the 40th anniversary of the original film’s release as well as the Winter Olympics, where men’s hockey consistently ranks among the most-watched events.”
The film features a diverse cast, including Ashton James as Dean Youngblood, Blair Underwood as his father Blane, and Shawn Doyle as Coach Chadwick, among others. The screenplay was adapted by Josh Epstein, Kyle Rideout, Seneca Aaron, and the late Charles Officer. Producers include Bill O’Dowd and Emerson Davis from Dolphin Entertainment, along with Anthony Leo and Andrew Rosen from Aircraft Pictures.
The acquisition was facilitated by CAA Media Finance and Dolphin Entertainment, which continues to represent the film’s international distribution rights.
