How Kate Middleton Boosts Her Confidence with a Simple Styling Tip
Kate Middleton Attends Commonwealth Day Service Amid Royal Scrutiny
On March 9, Kate Middleton joined the royal family for the annual Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, marking their first significant gathering since Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest on February 19. Fashion commentator Lisa Talbot noted that the Princess of Wales utilized a "very clever style" trick, enhancing her presence to appear "more commanding and confident."
For the occasion, Middleton opted for a cobalt blue pleated coatdress designed by Catherine Walker, a brand closely associated with royal fashion. Walker’s designs, once favored by Princess Diana, have become a staple in Middleton’s wardrobe for high-profile events.
This gathering, significant in light of recent royal headlines, showcased Middleton’s choice of attire. Her coatdress featured a structured silhouette with a nod to the 1980s, which Talbot described as a “secret style weapon.” The strong lines created by shoulder pads contributed to an aura of authority, helping the Princess embody the concept of "power dressing."
"The return of the structured shoulder is a very clever style signal," Talbot explained. "Shoulder pads have long been associated with authority and presence. They visually broaden the frame, strengthen the silhouette, and create a sense of composure and control."
Talbot emphasized that such structured designs project strength without words, noting that this style is often used by women in leadership roles, enhancing their commanding presence.
For accessories, the Princess donned a blue Sean Barrett hat, previously worn at the 2023 Commonwealth Day service, which featured a new layer of veil netting. She also wore navy suede Gianvito Rossi pumps, a five-strand pearl necklace from her collection, and Bahrain pearl drop earrings from Queen Elizabeth’s collection. She completed her look with a Strathberry bag.
"At a moment when the royal family is under scrutiny and navigating difficult headlines, the strong shoulder creates an image of stability and reassurance," Talbot remarked. "It’s polished, purposeful, and incredibly modern, projecting confidence while remaining elegant and respectful to the occasion."
