How Did the Debates Influence Your Thoughts? Feedback from NBCLA Viewers
Impact of Wednesday Night’s Debates on California’s Upcoming Primaries
Viewers were surveyed regarding the influence of Wednesday night’s debates for California governor and Los Angeles mayor on their voting intentions for the June primary election.
Candidates vying for the positions of California governor and Los Angeles mayor faced off in a debate double-header hosted by NBCLA and Telemundo 52 on Wednesday evening. Key topics included wildfires, immigration, homelessness, public safety, and overall quality of life.
The crucial statewide primary election on June 2 will decide which candidates advance to the November runoff, where only the top two from each race will compete. Voters have until May 18 to register for the upcoming primary.
Candidates had the opportunity to present their platforms directly to voters, aiming to establish themselves as the best options for critical leadership roles in the state and city.
In the mayoral debate, incumbent Karen Bass faced challengers Spencer Pratt and Councilmember Nithya Raman. The gubernatorial debate featured a lineup of prominent candidates, including former U.S. Health Secretary Xavier Becerra (D), Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco (R), and several others from both parties.
As discussions about the future of Los Angeles and California unfold close to the June primary, viewer reactions to the debates are beginning to surface.
Viewer Reactions on the Mayoral Debate
In a poll of over 2,000 viewers, 73% reported that their opinions had not changed following the debate, while about 23% indicated that they were persuaded to shift their support. Additionally, 4% remained undecided.
Responses from viewers highlighted a mix of opinions. One viewer, Sonya from Chatsworth, remarked, "Pratt was surprisingly good… it was clear that Bass and Raman are the unserious ones about improving the quality of life for citizens of LA. Pratt won my vote." Conversely, another viewer, Arthur from Los Angeles, expressed discontent with celebrity candidates, stating, "Spencer Pratt is not qualified to be Mayor. Please no more childish celebrities for serious public offices."
Others reflected on their views of Bass and Raman, with Candace from Los Angeles acknowledging Bass’s experience while noting, "She has by no means been perfect but I think she is the best candidate to move our City forward for the next 4 years."
Viewer Reactions on the Gubernatorial Debate
In the competition for the governor’s office, 63% of respondents indicated that the debate had not altered their voting preferences, while 17% suggested they were contemplating a change. Approximately 20% of nearly 630 respondents remained undecided.
Responses included praise for specific candidates, with Shirley from Sacramento expressing her admiration for Tom Steyer’s boldness. Rudy from Monrovia appreciated Steve Hilton’s directness, stating, "His confidence is truly high. I can see him leading our state to the golden age once again!"
Katie Porter was also commended for her performance, with Andrea from Temecula noting, "If you don’t know how to conduct yourself… then you don’t deserve my vote."
As the primaries approach, candidates are focusing on critical issues such as housing affordability and the ongoing challenges facing California, with viewer sentiment reflecting a mix of hope, frustration, and interest in upcoming choices.
