Rob Reiner and Wife Michele Found Dead in Brentwood Home
The entertainment world was rocked Sunday by the tragic news that director Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer Michele Reiner, were found dead in their Brentwood residence. Family, friends, and colleagues expressed shock and sorrow over the loss of the couple, known for their contributions to both the arts and social activism.
Sources familiar with the investigation confirmed to NBC News that the couple was discovered inside their home, reportedly bearing signs of stab wounds. Rob Reiner, 78, enjoyed a prolific career that included classic films such as “This is Spinal Tap,” “A Few Good Men,” “When Harry Met Sally,” and “The Princess Bride.”
Tracy Reiner, their daughter, shared her disbelief, stating, “I came from the greatest family ever. I don’t know what to say, I’m in shock.”
Rob Reiner, son of comedy pioneer Carl Reiner, had been married to Michele Singer Reiner, 68, since 1989, after they met during the making of “When Harry Met Sally.” The couple had three children together.
LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton reported that authorities are not currently pursuing any suspects as they continue their investigation. The identities of the victims were not immediately released, though the LA County Coroner is expected to provide more information soon.
Rob Reiner first gained fame on the 1970s sitcom “All in the Family,” where he played the character “Meathead.” Throughout his career, he garnered two Emmy Awards for his work in television.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass referred to Reiner’s death as a significant loss for the city, stating, “Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice.”
Reiner was also previously married to actor-director Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981, and he adopted her daughter, Tracy. Both Carl Reiner and Penny Marshall have also passed away in recent years.
Norman Lear’s family, remembering the couple, noted, “The Lear Family is devastated by the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner.” They highlighted the couple’s commitment to improving the country through their art and activism, recalling the close bond Rob shared with Norman Lear.
Actor Kathy Bates, who starred in Reiner’s 1990 film “Misery,” expressed her heartbreak over the news, saying, “I’m horrified hearing this terrible news. Absolutely devastated… My thoughts are with their family.”
Governor Gavin Newsom and his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom paid their respects, emphasizing Reiner’s impactful work as a storyteller and advocate. Newsom noted that his legacy included significant contributions to civil rights and children’s education, stating, “Rob will be remembered for his remarkable filmography and for his extraordinary contribution to humanity.”
Former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle articulated similar sentiments in a post on social media, expressing their sorrow and honoring the Reiners’ commitment to promoting goodness through their lives and work. “They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired,” Obama wrote.
