Guillaume Canet and Marion Cotillard Bring Their Psychological Thriller ‘Karma’ to Cannes
Cotillard Takes on Complex Role in New Thriller
In a dramatic turn, Marion Cotillard stars as a woman grappling with a tumultuous past in her latest film, directed and written by Guillaume Canet. This project marks a significant collaboration for the two, their sixth following works such as Little White Lies, Blood Ties, Rock’n Roll, Little White Lies 2, and Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom.
Cotillard shared insights into the creative process, recalling Canet’s vision for her role. “He said, ‘I really want to write a movie for you with a very, very strong character, with something different from what you did before’,” she revealed. The character, as conceptualized by Canet, is one whose hidden past resurfaces, dramatically altering her life. “He wrote a very, very strong and twisted script for me. She’s a woman who slowly reveals herself, who thinks she’s weak but discovers she’s not,” Cotillard explained.
The thriller is produced by Paris-based Iconoclast, in collaboration with Canet’s production company, Caneo France. Pathé Films is responsible for both the French distribution and international sales.
